If you’re posting consistently and still hearing crickets, it’s tempting to blame the algorithm.
It’s not the algorithm. It’s probably not a shadowban either.
Ray Higdon has reviewed hundreds of social media profiles, and almost every time, the same three problems show up. Often all three at once.
Reason #1: You’re Not Posting Actual Value
“Value” is one of the most overused words in marketing. And most people misunderstand it completely.
Posting about your buy-one-get-one sale? Not value. Showcasing your ingredients or product benefits? Also not value, if the only way someone gains from it is by buying from you.
Real value is content your audience benefits from whether or not they ever purchase.
Think about creators like Gary Breca, Alex Hormozi, or Cody Sanchez. You gain something from their content just by watching. That’s the bar.
Posture Check: Your content should solve problems or help people attain desires for the audience you’re trying to attract. You can mention your product, service, or opportunity, but it shouldn’t be the whole show.
What might that look like? Tips, frameworks, stories, and wisdom that are genuinely useful to the people you want to reach. Comedy works too, if it creates a moment of real connection or relief.
The rule is simple: if someone has to buy from you to get anything out of your post, it’s not value content.
Reason #2: You’re Going for the Sale Instead of the Lead
Social media is not a storefront. When you treat it like one, it tends to punish you.
Ray puts it plainly: your profile should not be your cash register. Your DMs should be.
When you go straight for the sale on your profile, you miss the relationship layer entirely. You may get a transaction here and there. But you leave a hundred potential leads on the table for every one sale you make.
Think about it this way. If you built an email list of 100,000 people through consistent lead generation, no platform change or shop shutdown can take that from you. A “buy now” post? That can disappear overnight.
Posture Check: The three-step framework that actually works is this: generate a lead, connect with the lead, determine the need. In that order. Every time.
This is especially powerful if your company has a wide product catalog. You don’t need to shout about everything you offer. Instead, create content that gets people to raise their hand. Then connect with them directly, find out what they actually need, and match them to the right solution.
That’s when DMs become a cash register. That’s when sales feel natural instead of forced.
Reason #3: Your Content Is All Over the Place
One day you’re posting about your kids’ swim meet. The next it’s a Bible verse. Then a product pitch. Then a personal rant about your HOA.
This is one of the most common mistakes Ray sees when reviewing profiles.
People follow accounts that consistently help them with a specific problem or desire. Scattered content signals that you don’t have a clear identity, and unclear identities don’t build audiences.
You might look at your favorite influencer and think they post about everything. And they do, but that’s not how they built their following. Almost every major creator started focused.
Grant Cardone is a great example. For 15 to 20 years, he was known as one thing: the car sales guy. He trained car sales teams. That was the niche. He built a massive base through that focus. Now he can talk about almost anything and the audience is there. But the foundation was focus.
Posture Check: If you haven’t built influence yet, you don’t get to post like someone who has. Pick a lane. Serve that lane consistently. The audience will come.
The shortcut of copying an established influencer’s scattered posting style, before you’ve built the base they built, is a trap. You’re studying their current behavior, not the behavior that earned them their platform.
The Fix Starts Today
These three problems compound each other. Scattered content with no real value, pushing for the sale instead of the lead, creates an online presence that feels like noise. People scroll right past noise.
The good news: all three are fixable.
Start by auditing your last 10 posts. Ask yourself honestly: does someone gain from this without buying from me? Am I asking for the lead or the sale? Does this fit a consistent theme my audience can identify?
If the answer to any of those is no, that’s your starting point.
Your content should be doing the heavy lifting of getting people to raise their hand. Then your skills take over in the conversation. But if the content is broken, the conversations never start.
Fix the content. Generate the leads. Make the sales in the DMs.
