Desperation Is Killing Your Sales (Here’s How to Stop It in 3 Steps)

by | Jul 21, 2026 | Posture & Leadership

Prospects don’t hate your offer. They feel your desperation.

That’s the hard truth Ray Higdon puts on the table. Even when someone actually wants what you’re selling, the energy you bring to the conversation can shut the sale down before it ever had a chance.

Step 1: Talk to More People

Desperation almost always traces back to a thin pipeline.

If you’re only following up with two or three prospects at a time, it’s nearly impossible not to come across as needy. Every conversation carries the weight of “this might be all I’ve got.” That weight shows up in your tone, your word choices, and the pressure you apply, even when you don’t intend to.

When you’re talking to 40 or 50 people a week, no single prospect holds that kind of power over you.

Here’s the counterintuitive part: not being desperate actually increases your close rate. You’d think that pressing harder would produce more results. It doesn’t. People feel commission breath. The more urgency you project for your own sake, the faster they pull away.

Posture Check: A full pipeline is one of the most underrated posture tools available. You cannot manufacture calm when you’re banking everything on one conversation. Go get more conversations.

Volume also gives you the repetitions you need to develop real skill. When you haven’t studied closing and prospecting, you’ll likely apply pressure without even knowing it, not because you’re pushy by nature, but because you haven’t learned the nuances of how to handle a conversation well. More reps fix that over time.

Step 2: Focus on Their Problem, Not Your Solution

Most reps lead with their product. They talk about the ingredients, the opportunity, the ground-floor timing, the compensation plan.

All of that is solution-focused. And none of it lands when the prospect hasn’t yet told you what they actually need.

If you don’t know the problem they’re trying to solve, or the desire they’re trying to reach, you will come across as desperate every single time. Because without that information, all you can talk about is your thing, and “your thing” is not what closes people.

Ray’s question is a simple one: do you even know Joe’s problem? Do you know what Melissa is hoping for? If your answer is no, there’s a good chance it’s because you never asked.

What you want to know before you pitch anything:

What are they dealing with right now? What do they hope for? What would change for them if this actually worked?

When you focus on their stated problem or desire, the conversation stops feeling like a pitch and starts feeling like a diagnosis. That shift alone removes most of the desperation from the room. You’re not selling anymore. You’re helping someone figure out if your solution fits the thing they already told you they need.

Posture Check: The prospect’s problem is the anchor. Your solution is the response to it. Get those two things in the right order and the conversation changes completely.

Step 3: Carry Posture in Everything You Say

Posture is the management of the energy of the conversation.

When someone pulls away, what do you do? The untrained rep chases. They get louder, more persistent, more eager. The postured rep does the opposite: they pull away too.

Ray shares the energy he carried when he was reaching out to his warm market in the company where he went on to become the number one income earner. The words may not fit your situation exactly, but the energy is what matters:

“Hey, I’m gonna do this with or without you. I’d love to do it with you. If you’re open to it, great. If not, no big deal.”

That one sentence contains everything. Confidence in the direction he’s already moving. Genuine invitation. Zero attachment to the outcome.

When someone’s yes or no doesn’t change your yes, you stop chasing. That’s the posture most people are missing.

Most reps, without realizing it, are almost guilting and shaming people into joining them. That creates a toxic dynamic from the start. It doesn’t feel like a business opportunity. It feels like an obligation.

If you want to go deeper on managing the energy of the conversation and how to hold posture through the entire sales process, the Posture, Persuasion & Closing the Sale training is a free 90-minute resource built specifically for this.

Posture Check: You saying no doesn’t affect my yes. That’s the energy. Carry it into every conversation and watch how differently people respond.

Put It Together

These three steps compound each other.

More people in the pipeline means less pressure on any single conversation. Less pressure means you can actually listen for their problem instead of pitching your solution. And when you’re listening and not chasing, posture becomes natural rather than forced.

Get rid of the commission breath. Not by willing it away, but by building the habits that make it unnecessary.

Talk to more people. Focus on their problem before your solution. Hold your posture when they pull away.

Do those three things consistently and the desperation that’s been costing you sales starts to disappear.
