First of all, what is twitter?

Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that enables its users to send and read each others’ updates, known as tweets. Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 characters, displayed on the author’s profile page and delivered to other users – known as followers – who have subscribed to them. Senders can restrict delivery to those in their circle of friends or, by default, allow open access.

So Is Twitter good for local business marketing? The answer is, without a doubt, yes! Twitter is perfect for coupon deals, last minute inventory and updates about you or your company. You can target a very specific type of person based on your niche and have it make sense. Most of the usefulness of twitter is experienced through the use of third party applications but Twitter is good for local business marketing. I would encourage you to create a twitter account if you have not already and at least do the following steps.

1) Setup tweetlater, tweetlater is a way to automate your replies and get a digest of where you are mentioned, or retweeted in conversations so you can aptly respond to them.
2) Check out twellow for the full power of searching other tweeter’s profiles. You see the built-in search for twitter limits you to searching conversations where twellow searches the bio’s, which may be more appropriate.
3) Join the conversation! On tweetlater you can automatically follow anyone that follows you, recommended! So reply or retweet to the people you want to build a relationship with and you are set to go!
