Dealing with Rejection in MLM

Dealing with RejectionIf there is one trait you just must have to succeed in mlm, it is dealing with rejection. You have to be willing to GET rejection to succeed in anything in life and MLM is no exception. In this blog post I am going to share with you how to cope with rejection and how to become more powerful while building your homebased business.

Dealing with Rejection from Close Friends or Family Members

Touchy subject? Haha, I bet it is. Hopefully you are in an MLM that has an inviting system or an upline leader that has taught you the RIGHT way to prospect. One blog that may help you is this one – How to Connect with People. Here is the number one problem with family and close friends…we break the rules. Someone once said Casualness causes Casualty and it is so true.

You have to follow the system even if they are close to you. Part of dealing with rejection is not forgetting the system and also not being addicted to an outcome. An addiction to an outcome might be you thinking your best friend or brother would be awesome at your homebased business but when they say no, you get frustrated.

Dealing with Rejection Can Suck, But not if you are Trained Properly

You may have read Tim Ferriss’s book, the 4 hour workweek, did you know that 26 out of 27 publishers vehemently rejected it? Would you have quit after the 10th rejected your book?

Adversity causes some men to break; others to break records.

- William Arthur Ward

Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents, which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant.

- Horace

Adversity is like a strong wind. It tears away from us all but the things that cannot be torn, so that we see ourselves as we really are.

- Arthur Golden

All the adversity I’ve had in my life, all my troubles and obstacles, have strengthened me… You may not realize it when it happens, but a kick in the teeth may be the best thing in the world for you.

- Walt Disney

Dealing with rejection is something you will never get away from, as long as you are striving to succeed at anything. Every avatar and prominent person you have ever heard had to deal with adversity and rejection, why should you skip those wonderful lessons?

Dealing with Rejection

Put a Dollar Figure to your Rejections

One of the best trainings on how to cope with rejection that I have ever read is the Go For No training. This training teaches you that by going for no, you will eventually get to yes’s and to success. One example is the year that Babe Ruth broke the record for homeruns, he also broke the record for strikeouts…he simply swung the bat the most times!

Another powerful way that you can make dealing with rejection not that big of a deal is to put a dollar figure on it. Last night I ran a webinar for my team and I had myself and 5 other all-star marketers on and every one of them said that they averaged about a 10% sign up rate of who they talked to. That doesn’t mean 90% rejection but more like 10% said no, 10% said yes and 80% were somewhere in the middle. Well, in our company you make $100 per sale so essentially each person you speak to is like putting $10 in your pocket! The question is, how many $10 bills would you like? Well, then, GO TALK TO MORE PEOPLE!

Next question-How can you work or teach someone if they are not teachable?

You can’t. They have to want it.

    Ray,

Your training webinar last night was exceptional. You made me realize a lot of things I hadn’t thought of, such as the $10 for every person you speak with. Also, your guests had some very motivating stories as well. Keep the good stuff coming…you are a great leader!

Putting a dollar amount on the people you talk to is brilliant. I totally had an epiphany when you said that talking to each person is like putting $10 in your pocket. That makes so much sense (assuming a 10% sign up ratio) and makes hearing the ‘no’ or ‘maybe’ even less of a concern.

    Excellent write Ray!

Regardless of the MLM a marketer is involved with we’ve all felt this kind of pain. I like your note of being “addicted to an outcome” and thus the pain. What a great way to look past the outcome if you simply provide value. The timing may not be right for most, but for a few it is!

    Hi Ray,

Great post. I like to think of rejection as “they’re not ready for what I have yet.” That’s how I interpret a “no”.

My trick is that I do my best to become totally detached from the sale and more in tune with the PROCESS. If someone says no, why? What were the circumstances? Was there anything I could or should have done differently?

In other words, I turn it into research, keep notes and learn from every no. (I also do this for every “yes” – you can learn alot from them, too!).

Keep ‘em coming, Ray. Love your stuff!

Great distinction Bob, I learn a lot from my yes’s too, it is through my questioning of yes’s that I learned what phrases closed the most people and what videos worked best too

Its almost like the asking girls for a date. Eventually, one will says yes.

  9. Dan Rice - Online MLM Profits Says:

When you get really good at identifying needs you tend not to offer your product to someone who’s not qualified for it. When you stop trying to sell to unqualified prospects you stop getting as many no’s.

I read Go for no, personally I prefer the philosophy Tim Sales teaches on Professional Inviter with his Greet, Qualify, Invite, Close to Action, Followup formula.

Even then you still get No’s & when you do just remember it means Next Opportunity.

Awesome post Ray. I love your point “Babe Ruth broke the record for homeruns, he also broke the record for strikeouts…” That really illustrates how it’s not important how many times you get knocked down, but rather how many times you get back up.

Really cool post Ray! Loved the tips, and putting a dollar figure on it, very true.

Once people get their mind right about rejection and put it in the correct place they can move forward and build a business. As entrpreneurs it happens and it’s ok. It’s how we think about it that makes all the difference!

Teaching reps to associate something positive with their prospecting is a great strategy. It’s such a common challenge for folks to allow their fear of rejection to negatively impact their production. Associating a dollar figure to each contact can go a long way towards decreasing those negative emotions. It also gets reps to focus on taking correct action rather than focusing on the possible outcomes. Thanks, Ray.
