Building your Network Marketing Business without Selling Your Soul.

I am going to give you some major value today and share with you the six secrets to building your network marketing business without selling your soul. I have broken down what I believe are the six most crucial pillars for you to build a long lasting business inside of network marketing. Isn’t that cool? Doesn’t that sound like a good idea? Is that something you’re interested in? I hope so! I also pulled up some scripture that backs up my thoughts around the topic.

Here’s what I’ve noticed…. a lot of people think they have to be pushy or that they have to do things underhanded or they have to lie or hype or something like that and I’ve never attracted those kinds of people, but I know that it’s a thing. I know that there’s people that think they have to be unethical or they have to make promises that they’re not even sure of… and I’m here to tell you that you don’t have to do any of those things to build a serious network marketing business.

A Quick Example.

I’ll give you one quick example then we will get into the six secrets. Whenever I would talk to someone and they would ask me questions…like “well how long?” “how long until I’m making really good money.” I always answered the same way with...”Hey what if it takes you a few years?” They were always surprised by that answer. I don’t know if it’s because they had heard different answers from other people…maybe…I don’t know, but I think they were expecting me to say “oh man in the next 20 days you’re going to be rich.” I just never did that, because for most people it’s not true. Almost everyone is not going to be rich quickly in any business let alone network marketing. What I found is by setting their expectations up front and just being honest with them they really appreciated it. It was very rare for me to actually miss a sale because I spoke truth to them and they were actually more likely to stick around longer. Isn’t that what you want? Don’t you want people to stick around longer? When you tell someone that they’re going to achieve success or make a lot of money and you give them a timeline… what you’re really giving them is a deadline of disappointment. “When should I be disappointed?” Well whatever amount of time you told them it would take them to be successful. If you told them they would be successful in their first 60 days, you just had them set a 60-day disappointment deadline. In 60 days when they’re not successful and they’re not making a ton of money they’re going to blame you because you’re the one that told them that amount of time.

Let’s jump in!

Number One.

First pillar. This isn’t necessarily an order by the way, but the first pillar I’m going to talk about is leadership. I want to bring up a couple verses for you. Let’s start with Philippians 2: 3-4. (I mean there’s literally thousands of examples and verses in the Bible about leadership but here’s a couple that really stood out to me that I think will help set your pace of how to think about leadership.)

Philippians 2: 3-4 “do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit rather in humility value others above yourselves not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interest of the others.”

When you really set your attention and focus on “the others”… “the others” could be your prospects, your customers, your clients, your students, …when you really think about what is the best for them you are leading them. You’re doing a great job. For example we have our Higden Maxwell Mentorship Program so I am constantly thinking about, what’s going to help them? Because that’s kind of my personal Inner Circle. That’s my mentoring group and I’m constantly thinking about what’s going to help them. Constantly. Now not just them, but I’m constantly looking at scripture and I’m constantly looking at what I’m learning and how might that benefit you (reading this post) whether you’re in a mentorship program or not. I am always thinking of the person that I want to help.

I’m wanting to help the person that’s growing a network marketing business that wants to have integrity, that wants to be authentic, that doesn’t want to be a showboat, that doesn’t want to just use hype marketing and rent a yacht for the day or whatever…they don’t want to just be show. They want to actually serve their people.

Now I’m not saying don’t get the yacht or whatever but um if that’s the height of your leadership… it is hypee Marketing. You are probably not attracted to my stuff anyway…you’re probably not even reading this… Think and really position yourself to constantly think about your followers, your customers, your prospects, the people you are wanting to serve that’s what really helps you in thinking about leadership properly.

The second verse I want to bring up is pretty straightforward. It actually also works for work-life balance (which is one of our other pillars…one of our other secrets). Proverbs 27:23. Proverbs 27 actually the whole thing is very powerful for business.

Proverbs 27:23 Tells us “be diligent to know the state of your flocks and attend to your herds.”

Now that doesn’t just mean customers, that also means your children. That’s why it works for work-life balance as well. We want to know the state of our flocks. So how does that work with network marketing leadership? Well one thing that we used to do when we were leading an organization (my wife and I were the number one earners in that company before I was ever a coach or a trainer) is we had these accountability sheets where they could earn badges and rewards. We were constantly looking at.. “okay who’s rank advancing?” Who’s doing the activity?” We would recognize people in between ranks. Which is a very critical notion of leadership. Now depending on the size of the team that you have, if you have a massive team then you may not… just be you. You may have some different levels of leadership but you want to know who’s doing the work. Who’s putting in the effort to do follow-up and prospecting etc. Know the state of your flocks.

Number Two.

Number two. Again this isn’t necessarily an order…the second pillar is mindset. I could hit you with so many verses around mindset but let me hit you with what I think are some of the heavier hitting verses. I picked up three of my favorite verses around mindset. First of all James 1: 2-4.

James 1: 2-4 “Consider pure joy my brothers and sisters whenever you face trials of many kinds because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance, let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete.”

Not lacking anything. James, brother of Jesus says consider a pure joy when You Face trials…huh what you talking about James? Consider it pure joy? If you study the Book of James and also the book of Hebrews they are telling you that when you’re facing trials, this may sound strange for you, but know that your father loves you. Know that your heavenly father loves you because he doesn’t want you to remain the same. If you don’t have any trials, if you don’t have any tribulations, if you don’t have any breakdowns, if you don’t have any any struggle, if there’s no wind against your sails, then you don’t grow. You remain the same. I will tell you right now I know for certain that God loves you so much he will never allow you to remain the same. You have to adopt that kind of mindset. Instead of “oh I can’t believe this is happening to me” right? Some of you know that my wife and I just came back from Israel…while there…war broke out. It was kind of crazy. Instead of just being in full-blown fear and full-blown anger or whatever (we could have chosen that) I chose, “hey I guess I’m supposed to grow from this.”

When you take life in that manner… Well let me give you a very practical example. The month that my number one leader left my team when I was building a network marketing business was also the month I broke my recruiting record. That is how I react to the not so great things. That’s how I reacted to the various trials…now back then I wasn’t Christian, I hadn’t come to Christ, I didn’t know any of these verses. Did I consider it pure joy? I don’t know if I considered it pure joy but I sure reacted in the right way. Does that make sense?

The second verse I have is very similar but it’s just a little bit different wording, Hebrews 12:11

Hebrews 12:11 says, “no discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful but painful later on however it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.”

I mean that’s the greatest understatement in the Bible. Now here’s the deal, you’re going to have discipline, you’re going to have punches in the face, you’re going to have difficulty, you’re going to have bad days, you’re going to have a flat tire, you’re going to have someone quit on you, you’re going to have someone lie to you, but will you be trained by it? Will you allow it to work for you to improve and actually learn from it or is the lesson going to be repeated until it’s learned? That’s what I see happening all the time. People will have something bad happen and it’s where they’re either not appreciated, not loved, they’re lied to, they fall off the wagon of consistency, but they never learn from it…so it keeps happening over and over. God wants you to learn the lesson.

Last verse around mindset…I mean I could go all day on this but Philippians 2:14.

Philippians 2:14 “do all things without complaining.”

If you can recognize that God is Sovereign and that God will not put something in your lap that’s a difficulty without also providing you the way to overcome it and also allowing you to see He is greater than the difficulty…whether it’s financial, health or whatever. Well if you can recognize that whatever has happened to me whether it’s spiritual warfare, finance, loss of a job or whatever if He is Sovereign and He allowed this to happen then you complaining about it means you’re telling God, “hey God I would do it differently.” Remember how He talked to Job? Go study the Book of Job. Job went through some stuff and at some point God comes to him and says “hey are you the one that calls up the lightning? Are you the one that formed the mountains? Are you the one that created the lakes? Are you the one that did this?” and Job is humbled. He had the fear of the Lord. Very powerful concept. If you’re complaining and you understand that God is Sovereign then that means that you believe you are above His wisdom and you would do things differently. So I would be very cautious when you complain. I’d be very cautious.

There’s a term that when I was in Israel (we spent 10 days with an incredible guide who understands Aramaic and Hebrew but more important than the language he understands the intent of the language) you may have heard the term “blessed is the poor in spirit” poor doesn’t mean what you think. Poor doesn’t mean poor, doesn’t mean broke…poor means simple and content. They keep things simple, they’re content with whatever they have and whatever happens to them. That’s what the word poor means in that context. When you’re complaining are you simple or content? You’re definitely not content…you think God should have done it differently. I would just caution with that fact around complaining.

So number two is mindset.

Number Three.

Number three we will talk about wealth.

First of all, is it okay to have wealth?

It’s okay to have wealth, just don’t have wealth have you.

Deuteronomy 8:18 says, “you shall remember the Lord your God for it is He who gives you the power to get wealth”

The power to get wealth. What’s the power to get wealth you may wonder? That’s wisdom. Wisdom is the power to get wealth.

Tony Robbins says, “we don’t struggle from a lack of resources, we struggle from a lack of resourcefulness.” Well what’s resourcefulness? Resourcefulness is wisdom. The power to get wealth is wisdom. If you can understand that wealth is the solving of a problem at a scale and then the management of that resource. Money is a resource. It’s not the source, God is the source. Money is a resource. If you’re solving problems at scale (whether it’s through your network marketing product or your service or your team and your training etc.) and you are managing that resource then you’re going to have the power to get wealth. No question. You’re going to keep growing. Now for those that believe that there’s virtue in poverty. I’m not talking about poor in spirit, I’m talking about poverty or that it’s commendable to be broke…. if it was commendable to be broke, to be in poverty then the Bible would not instruct us to give to the poor… right? They would not. We’d mess it up for them, right? we’d mess up their spirituality if there was virtue in being poor as in poverty. Then we definitely shouldn’t give it to him because we will mess it up for him. If it was virtuous to be poor wouldn’t the devil try to get you more money? But the devil wants you broke.

Check this out…

Ecclesiastes 9:16 “But I say that wisdom is better than strength, though the poor man’s wisdom is despised and his words are not heeded.”

I’ve met a lot of people over the years that had wisdom, that had intelligence, that were smart about certain topics, but their influence unless they went out and created wealth their influence was always much lower than their intellect.

This rolls us right into the next one…

Luke 16:9 “I tell you use worldly wealth to gain friends for yourselves so that when it is gone you’ll be welcomed into Eternal dwellings.”

Now this divides Earth and Heaven, “use worldly wealth to gain friends for yourself” that’s very clear while you’re here on Earth. “So that when it is gone you’ll be welcomed into Eternal dwellings” so we are actually to become more influential and to become more generous so that we can win the hearts of others.

A lot of people don’t understand the parable of the unjust Steward. Well the parable of the unjust Steward. So stewards of money back in the first century just like tax collectors, what they would do is they would take what you owed and they would add some. If you owed 100 whatever…barrels of monkeys…whatever if you owed 100 barrels of monkeys they may say you owe 150 barrels of monkey and they capture the difference. So when the wealthy owner goes to the unjust Steward and says “hey man I’m going to fire you, you’re going to be gone.” He’s like, oh man I don’t want to beg and I’m too proud to beg and I don’t want to work with my hands I don’t want to dig ditches…. So he comes up with a plan to go to the people that owe his master and give them a discount. Well guess what? Number one if he was collecting money and being diligent in money collection…the owner never would have fired him. Number two when he goes and reduces what’s owed all he’s doing is taking out of his cut. He is literally not giving the money necessarily but he’s deducting what they owe which takes out of his pocket he’s using worldly wealth to gain friends for himself. Why do I know that, because that Parable is right above this verse. Just check the context. The context is right there, that parable is right there and then Luke 16 right underneath it, “use worldly wealth to gain friends for yourselves…”

Number Four.

Pillar number four or secret number four, work-life balance. Work-life balance. I’m going to give you this first. I already covered one about the the state of your flocks and herds…that’s from Proverbs 27, but check out Psalm 127: 3-5.this is so powerful

Psalm 127: 3-5 “behold children are a Heritage from the Lord: and the fruit of the womb is a reward. As arrows in the hand of a warrior so are the children of one’s youth, happy is the man who has his quiver full of them.”

Now this is really painting a picture for you. Your kids are not to be managed, they’re to be directed, they’re to be pointed in the direction and shot forward. This is not just hey make sure you feed them and stuff. This is actually directing them as if they are a weapon against evil as if they are a weapon of good, you’re to draw them back, you’re to point them, you’re to guide them to be the most powerful, the most direct powerful weapon on the planet.

How many of you saw my very first video back from Israel and I talked about some of the challenges that my wife and I went through. We go to Israel, we’re having a grand old time and then two tough things happen. Number one, both of our kids start acting up in school and so she’s really stressed out. You know. We’re across the world and we can’t do much about it…seven hours difference. Then number two, War breaks out. It’ll make that trip very memorable. Prayers for the Middle East, prayers for Israel, prayers for all the Innocents that are in one way or another being pulled into what’s going on…it’s just terrible. I’m not going to make this a political thing. It’s too long to go into…. but because of the kids struggling I prayed on it. I’m like you know what I’m going to become a homeschooler. I know if I homeschool them I can direct them, I can teach them entrepreneurship. I can teach them wealth building, I can teach them what’s actually going to serve them…let me hit the requirements of what needs to be for Florida homeschooling. I don’t think it’s that intense but what do I need to do for homeschooling and also what’s going to actually serve them. We’re going to be studying the Bible, we’re going to be studying Proverbs. We’re going to hone them into Fierce Warriors physically and mentally. I’m really excited about it, it’s going to be a lot of work but it’s just so important.

I would say to you that you can’t just think about management of life. When you think of work-life balance. First of all…balance the scales of balance are going to be a little bit out of whack but your presence and your intention…what is your intention with your business? What is your intention? You should have an intention with your family, not just make sure they’re fed, not just make sure they have water. That’s what you do with a hamster… that’s what you do with your puppy, but actually direct them, sharpen them. So that when they go out into the world they’re able to perform, they’re able to get after it and the whole time they’re making God first, they’re making God their priority.

Number Five.

All right so number five, marketing. I told you I was coming back to Proverbs 27. Proverbs 27:2… now listen, watch how these two go together so well in the same proverb.

Proverbs 27:2 “let another man praise you and not your own mouth a stranger not your own lips” Proverbs 27:21 “the refining pot is for silver and the furnace for gold and a man is valued by what others say of him”

By the way this doesn’t actually have to let others praise you and be valued by what others say of you…it can be about your service, your product or your opportunity. A lot of times people have really big goals, something great but you haven’t taken the time to study the testimonials or you haven’t worked with someone to help them gain a testimonial. When it comes to marketing one of the topics that we’ll talk about under marketing is, how to get better testimonials for you, your product, your service, your company etc. Why? because that is one of the keys. It’s not the only key but it is one of the keys for you to become a rockstar marketer.

Number Six.

Last but not least is sales. One of my favorite Proverbs around sales and I want you to just think about this situation here. Its reference to Joseph. Joseph’s brothers sold him off into slavery. He was diligent in his work, he did all things without complaining and he rose to the top. He eventually started serving the Pharaoh and he was the one that let the Pharaoh know about the famine that was coming. They put away 20%, they stocked it up for a rainy day and then Joseph was put in charge of the Grain. His brothers eventually came and then they reconciled etc.

Proverbs 11:26 “he who withholds grain the people will curse him but blessing will be on the head of him who sells it”

You may not sell grain, in fact you probably don’t…although now that I think about it I was actually part of a company when I was in my fail mode (because I failed in a bunch of different companies before I was a number one earner of one) and this was nothing against the company it was it was all me but when I was in fail mode I remember I was actually a rep of a company that had an Aztec grain. I don’t know if that company is still around. I don’t even remember the name of it to be honest, but I actually was at one point selling grain or at least attempting to…but think of grain because back then it was the ultimate need. It was the ultimate…if you don’t have grain you are not eating. So think about grain as a solution. If you know that your product, service or opportunity could help other people and you’re withholding it, you’re not sharing it with anybody. The people will curse you…they don’t want to be around you. “But the blessing will be on the head of him who sells it” so the person that is out there marketing and prospecting and telling others and evangelizing about the product, the service, the opportunity that they represent will be blessed. Why? because it’s a solution, because grain was a solution to eating. Your product or your service may be a solution to someone with acne or with low energy or with dry scalp or they want to make more money. You have grain, you have solutions, but if you don’t go out there and you don’t learn the appropriate way to talk to people about your product, service or opportunity then you’re going to be cursed.
