How to Get Over the Fear of Rejection

fear of rejection

A sure-fire way to NEVER succeed in Network Marketing is to hold onto your fear of rejection, this post will help you eliminate it.

Some Cool Rejection Quotes

“A rejection is nothing more than a necessary step in the pursuit of success.” – Bo Bennett

“You have people come into your life shockingly and surprisingly. You have losses that you never thought you’d experience. You have rejection and you have learn how to deal with that and how to get up the next day and go on with it. “ – Taylor Swift

“I take rejection as someone blowing a bugle in my ear to wake me up and get going, rather than retreat.” – Sylvester Stallone

“I was told to avoid the business all together because of the rejection. People would say to me, ‘Don’t you want to have a normal job and a normal family?’ I guess that would be good advice for some people, but I wanted to act.” – Jennifer Aniston

Now take that last one in the rejection quotes, I think that applies to network marketing too. If you don’t want to have an extraordinary life, then just never get over your fear of rejection. Harsh, but true. But, I know with you reading this post, you want the powerful, life not ordinary, here’s how to do it!

Embrace the Fear of Rejection..and do it anyway!get over the fear of rejection

Here’s a secret that I think most struggling network marketers don’t get…MLM leaders have a fear of rejection too, they just do it anyway! When I was starting out in my current MLM, after failing in 11 other ones AND calling people from a house that was in foreclosure, I was scared. I was terrified of their rejection. In fact, before almost every single call I would play out the conversation in my mind, just knowing they would say no (I wasn’t in the abundance mindset I am in now) but the difference is, I made the calls anyway.

If you can take on this mandate, your life WILL get better and YOU will become more powerful. Anytime you feel that familiar fear of rejection creeping over you, crippling you, stopping you from taking the action you KNOW you should be taking, I want you to do this. I want you to picture yourself like the biggest baddest animal in the jungle and charge forward anyway, despite your fear. Maybe you are a Rhinoceros, or an Elephant, or even a Lion. BE that animal and then take the action anyway. It is THESE defining moments that will show you what you are really made of versus the made up conversations you have been playing in your head and it is these moments that will build the extra-ordinary life you have been craving.

Want some Rejection Therapy?

Penniless, recently divorced, raising a child on her own, J.K. Rowling had her manuscript “Harry Potter” rejected by 12 publishers. “You might never fail on the scale I did, But it is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all—in which case, you fail by default.” – Jk Rowling

This gentleman, at age 65, was pissed off at receiving a social security check for $105 and did something about it. Colonel Sanders lived out of his car, traveling the country, knocking on doors sleeping in his white suit to try to sell his now famous chicken recipe. It only took 1,009 rejections for him to find a buyer.

Theodore Geisel’s kid books were rejected by 27 different publishers. You may know him as Dr. Seuss.

The point is, anyone, of any level of success had to face their fear of rejection and do it anyway. No one is born with an abscence of this fear, we all possess it, it is just the stuff inside of us that makes us go forward toward our dreams or let this fear crush us. My wish to you is that you become that which the world is waiting for.

  4. Hi Ray,

Great timing because I’m going door to door this afternoon for my mobile app business. The rejection isn’t as bad as it used to be. This is a new venture for me and I love designing apps for company’s and talking to them about how exciting it is and how it can help their bottom line!
It was nice reading your info!

Hey, by the way, do you need an app for your business. I would do a free demo for you free!

  7. Hi Ray,

Oh boy you nailed this one on the head, I have had these exact feelings of being rejected and worried what other people thought about me…..I tried to be what other people wanted me to be and found that everyone had a feeling on what or who I should be, and they were all over the board.

I have been scared to death to open my knowledge up to others by having the possibility of others ridiculing me and saying I was dumb or naive.

There are times that I still feel this way, I think it happens to all of us, and the power that it holds over us is almost scary, it can totally control our lives.

Thank you for sharing and this will be a good reference point to help me when my mindset gets a little out of kilter.

  8. Great examples of people in different situations who had to overcome rejection. Tim Ferris is another good example and behind just about every NY Times best seller is someone who faced a lot of rejection.

  22. Ray thanks for the great post. Fear of rejection stops so many people in their tracks that's why I believe so many more people have not been successful. We all live with fear the question is HOW do we live with it and overcome.

I’ve personally gotten to the point where I kinda smirk and giggle when people say “NO” because they obviously have NO CLUE what they’re missing out on, so I just Pray for them! LOL!!

  31. Ray, a wonderful reminder about the power of perseverance. If we can accept that not everyone will embrace our ideas and our goals, we can find success. I am reminded of the book ‘Go For No.’ We want the ‘yes’ but that means we’ll need to get through the ‘no’ responses. Rather than fearing the no, welcome it. It’s not a personal rejection. Does the waitress feel rejected if you say no to the offer of dessert? No. It’s often a matter of timing. She asks, say, 16 couples in an evening. Only four say yes. The other 12 are personally rejecting the waitress. They’re just not looking for dessert that night. On another night, they may say yes. Same when you talk to people about what you’re doing. A ‘no’ doesn’t mean a personal rejection of you, just the idea and only at that time.

  34. Hi Ray,

Another excellent post! Thank you! Loving the quotes and the real life “Rejection Therapy” :)

Many people fear rejection because they have not had ‘the business in them’ yet! What I mean is that they have not come a such a firm belief that they can deliver and help the prospects to achieve their dreams.

With the 100% belief and a servant’s heart to serve, prospecting is fun. The whole idea about prospects’ raising ‘objection’ is that there are still questions that needed to be answered. This is important because we do want our prospects to come to an intelligent decision.

Adding to that, this one perspective can help: prospecting is about collecting those intelligent decisions. A ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ answer is a good answer. One of the key leaders in our company has worked out that each ANSWER that we collect worth $3 FOR THE REST OF OUR LIVES! Very cool perspective!

    I appreciate your sharing, Ray!

  36. Great post Ray. It's sometimes tough to realize that mlm leaders have this fear as well. Yet, action is what separates them, working through the fear. If you were trapped in a deep dark forest, the only way out is to take steps, and eventually, you'll find your way out. You won't get out standing still trembling. Just tremble and walk.

  37. Great post and I love the stories you have used as illustrations Ray.

One thing that I use when people say no is to think of it just like a cup of coffee. If I offer someone a coffee and they so no who cares – but we can get so attached to business.

Did you know Robert Kiyosaki had Rich Dad Poor Dad turned down by every publisher in the USA? He self published and then we got a publisher in Australia to publish. Not sure how many copies he has sold now but when I was working with him it was over $25M.

    Thanks Ray

  38. Nice as always Ray,

I think part of the difficulty with overcoming the “fear of rejection” is that people don’t know what it is. They know they “don’t want to pick up the phone”, but can’t identify WHY. Kind of like fighting an invisible dragon. Until you identify the actual fear, it is very difficult to overcome.

One technique I learned years ago was to imagine the “worst that can happen.” ONce you have done that, ask yourself “Can I handle that?”, “Will I still be alive and able to function?” Once you say YES, the fear and anxiety of the unknown enemy become much more handlable.

    Thanks Again
    Oh Hale Yes!

  44. HI Ray I am not sure why but overcoming the “fear of rejection” was a pretty big hurdle for me to get over when I first got started online. Now that I think back about it I believe it all had to do with my belief. Yes you really have to believe this is the right thing,no matter what you are selling, potions.lotions pills or just information products if you don’t believe what you have is going to benefit someone somehow. Then you are going to take that rejection and make it work against you.. HUM Does this make sense? I just know when I started to believe in myself that rejection really wasn’t rejection it was just part of the learning process.. Thanks for sharing Ray I Loved This!! Keep up the good work. Chery :)
