The Branding Strategy That Actually Works

Are you confused about branding? You’re not alone. After studying countless books, coaches, and experts on branding, I’ve discovered that most people—even professionals—misunderstand what makes a brand truly powerful.

Today, I’m sharing a completely different approach to building a brand that not only generates leads and sales but also aligns with your God-given purpose and brings fulfillment.

Why Most Branding Advice Fails You

The common branding advice is fundamentally flawed. When I scroll through social media, I see the same mistake repeatedly: people plastering their company name and products everywhere. Your bio, banner, and posts showcase your products or opportunity, thinking this demonstrates pride in your company.

Here’s the harsh truth: this approach is killing your momentum and cheapening your brand.

When I was the number one income earner in my network marketing company, an interesting statistic emerged—1,300 people per month were searching “What MLM is Ray Higdon in?” Why? Because I never mentioned my company name. It wasn’t in my bio, banner, or posts. If someone wanted to know what I was doing, they had to contact me directly.

Meanwhile, I was consistently producing valuable content for 20 years—videos, articles, meetings, events, and webinars—focusing on helping people solve their problems, not selling my product.

The Three Questions That Create a Magnetic Brand

If you want a brand with momentum that attracts people naturally, you must answer these three critical questions:

  1. Who do I help?
  2. How do I help them?
  3. Why should they listen to me?

The biggest mistake? Answering “How do I help them?” with your product or service. That’s not what creates an irresistible brand.

Instead, your “how” should be something like “I help them with a four-step process” or “a seven-step blueprint” or “a six-exercise program”—something intriguing that makes your target audience desperate to learn more.

When you constantly talk about your product or service, two negative things happen:

  1. People think you’re always selling, which creates resistance
  2. You create “independent researchers” who go to Amazon, eBay, or Google to find your product elsewhere—often discovering negative articles or competitors with better marketing

Finding Your God-Given Purpose Through Your Past Struggles

Here’s where branding becomes deeply personal and powerful: help the person you used to be.

Everything you’ve been through—grief, trauma, financial struggles, identity issues, difficult relationships—has been equipping you for your purpose. Instead of focusing on what happened to you, focus on who you’re called to serve.

Judges 3:1-2 tells us that “The Lord allowed some of the Israelites to experience war so that they could help those going through war.” Your personal struggles weren’t random—they were preparation.

People would rather listen to someone who has overcome their specific challenge (an authority) than someone with credentials who hasn’t personally experienced it (an expert). If you’ve lost weight, overcome grief, or built a business from nothing, that experience is more valuable than any degree or certification.

Walking in Your Anointing Brings God’s Favor

When you walk in your God-given calling—your “anointing”—doors swing wide open. You get invited to speak on stages and podcasts. People reach out to you seeking help. God’s favor becomes evident.

Conversely, when you don’t walk in your anointing, life becomes difficult. You feel confused, overwhelmed, and depressed. This is what happened to King David in 2 Samuel 12:1—”at the time of the year when kings went out to battle, David stayed home.” The very next verse begins his downfall with Bathsheba.

Even worldly success without fulfillment leads to emptiness. Mr. Beast, despite generating a billion dollars from YouTube, reportedly says he’s the most unhappy he’s ever been. Tom Brady, after winning multiple Super Bowls, once said, “Most days I just wonder, is this it?”

As Tony Robbins says, “Success without fulfillment is the ultimate failure.” I don’t want that for you.

How to Discover Your Brand Purpose

Start with prayer and honest reflection. Look at your past and identify what you’ve overcome, survived, or progressed through:

  • Were you once broke and now financially stable? You might be called to help others escape poverty.
  • Did you find success but feel empty until discovering your faith? That could be your story to share.
  • Have you overcome grief, health challenges, or relationship struggles?

When you vulnerably share how you can help others because of your experiences, your brand will naturally grow. Your personal journey becomes your “mantle”—guiding what content to create without chasing trends or viral moments.

Proverbs tells us “the Lord blesses you with good success and adds no sorrow.” When you walk in your anointing and properly steward what God has given you, you’ll experience momentum like never before.
