If You’re Confused, It’s Not from God

Confusion isn’t from God. God is not the author of confusion. We are. This simple truth can revolutionize how you approach every challenge, decision, and situation in your life. When you understand who you really are in Christ, confusion disappears and clarity takes its place.

The Life-Changing Truth of Galatians 2:20

Galatians 2:20 sets the tone for everything: “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body I live by faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave himself for me.”

Think about this: I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. This might change how you speak about yourself. It might have you wonder, “Who is this person I call myself?”

Life in Christ reflects the place where He lives and where we live in Him. Our vision of ourselves is always upgraded in Jesus. When you refuse to walk as a new creation, you continue to berate, condemn, and beat up who you call yourself.

We all know the verse that there’s no condemnation in Christ, but so many Christians are busy condemning themselves. They think they’re not enough, they’ve screwed up too bad, or that God doesn’t know what they’ve done. But remember, Galatians 2:20 comes from a guy who had Christians killed. Even if you’ve made terrible mistakes, there’s still hope that you could write a majority of the New Testament. How amazing is that?

Stop Living Below Your True Identity

It’s not that you’re too far gone for God. It’s that you’re staying committed to someone you no longer are. Once you accept Christ, according to 2 Corinthians 5:17, you are a new creation. The old has passed away. The old is gone.

When we refuse to walk as the new creation, it’s like having a first-class ticket on a plane but choosing to travel in coach. You look up and see people enjoying the premium experience, but you say, “You know what? Do you have anything back there where I have to pay for water and you give me some pretzels?”

You would never do that with an airline ticket, but Christians choose to do this every single day when they don’t realize that all of heaven’s favor is attracted to the Christ in you. You have every spiritual blessing already because of who’s in you. We abide in Christ, He abides in us.

That wasn’t special to Paul. He didn’t get the only Willy Wonka ticket. That’s for all of us who have accepted Christ.

Start with God’s Heart, Not Your Inadequacy

What we’re doing here is attacking the way you think. Instead of starting with you (that unworthy, not good enough, filthy sinner), start with God’s heart. Know that His nature is to always grow you.

This applies to every single business transaction you ever do, every partnership, every relationship, and every single thing in your life. What’s your starting point? Are you starting with the unworthy you, or are you starting with the One who died for you and abides in you?

First class or coach? Which one do you want? It’s your choice.

Quit Declaring Who You’re Not

We need to quit declaring who we’re not. Stop saying, “I really struggle with that. I’m really confused. I don’t really know.” There’s no confusion in heaven. God’s not confused about who you are. You are.

Learn to understand how He sees you. When He looks at you, He sees His son. He sees Jesus in you, and all of heaven’s favor is attracted to you because of Christ in you. Not because of what you’re doing or what you’ve done or didn’t do, but because of what was finished on the cross.

If it’s not finished unless you do something, then it was never finished, and this is all a facade. If you have to do a bunch of stuff for it to be finished, then we’re confused, but God’s not.

Speak to Yourself More Than You Listen to Yourself

You can break negative thinking habits by speaking to yourself more than you listen to yourself. Even though we know we’re not given a spirit of fear, we sometimes fall into fear. Even though we know there’s no condemnation in Christ, we sometimes condemn ourselves.

Start having a hit list of verses for when you get in that downward position where you’re seeing the obstacle as bigger than God, where your fear is bigger than your faith, where you don’t know how much He actually loves you:

  • “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me”
  • “With the Lord at my right hand, I will not be shaken”
  • “He will never leave me or forsake me”

When we see lawsuits, health challenges, financial problems, teams falling apart, people quitting or betraying us as bigger than God, we need to step back. Take captive every thought and make it obedient to Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5). How would Christ think about those situations?

Be the Light That Can’t Be Hidden

Matthew 5:14-16 tells us we are the light of the world, a city on a hill that can’t be hidden. How are you a city on a hill that can’t be hidden? When you stop responding in worldly ways.

I’m proud of one of our brothers from men’s Bible study. Almost every week he comes in with a story of not being worldly. When someone was rude to him or others, he responded with love and joy. That’s being the light of the world.

Jesus said, “If you love those who love you, what difference is that?” It’s when we love our enemies that we stand out. First Peter 3:9 says, “Don’t trade evil for evil, insult for insult, but instead bless so that you can have a blessing.”

When someone talks bad about us and we actually bless them, when someone lies about us and we go behind their back to talk good about them, who does that? Nobody. But that’s the city on a hill that can’t be hidden.

A 7-Eleven Transformation Story

Here’s a personal example. Last January, I was at 7-Eleven and asked the clerk something. He said, “You can figure it out,” turned around, and ignored me. I didn’t like that response, but I held my tongue and walked out.

As I went to put my hand on my car door, I heard, “You could do better.” I pulled my hand back and thought, “You’re right.” I went back in and said, “Hey man, sorry you’re having a bad day.”

He looked at me and said, “Dude, I’m so sorry. You didn’t deserve that. I’m trying to be better. I had a bad night last night.” We ended up having an incredible, transformative conversation that only came because of his initial insult.

If he hadn’t been rude to me, we wouldn’t have had that transformational talk. I’ve now had so many experiences where I get to check my old self, walk in the new creation, and every single time there’s transformation.

Look for Opportunities to Be Blessed

You don’t have to respond to that person bashing you on social media in the same manner. You can thank God for blessing them. You can bless them in Jesus’ name. You can go and speak well of them to others.

Someone insults you, betrays you, lies about you, does you wrong? It’s almost like “Woo-hoo! I get to be blessed!” Jesus said you’re blessed when you’re persecuted, and to bless those who persecute you.

We just don’t think like that. We think, “Lord, why is this person mad at me?” But they crucified the man who did no wrong. Why do you think everyone should like you? Paul said he couldn’t be a people pleaser and a servant of Christ.

Be Fascinated with Christ, Not Intimidated by Circumstances

The new creation never sees a negative because they’re too involved with Jesus. Jesus is higher than whatever situation you’re facing, higher than whatever betrayal, higher than whatever problem.

We should be so fascinated with how Christ is going to show up in situations that we get goosebumps. “I just had a trial. Ooh, can’t wait to see what you do, Lord.”

Not just in personal life, relationships, or finances, but in business and every area of your life. We’re not intimidated by the enemy or circumstances because we’re too busy being fascinated by Christ.

Spend more time being fascinated with Christ. Spend more time being fascinated with what God’s doing in your life. When you do this, confusion disappears because you’re operating from your true identity in Him.
