7 Top Ways to Guarantee Failure in Network Marketing
There are tons of articles on how to succeed at this, succeed at that, how to stay motivated, etc, but what about those intent on failing? Well, I think they need a blueprint just as much as those who want to achieve. Now, this is a fun blog post as I split up the 7 ways to guarantee failure in network marketing into two blog posts. I share the 4 ways to guarantee failure as a network marketing rep below and in the future will share the 3 ways to guarantee failure as a network marketing recruiter. Now, I am assuming that no one REALLY intends on failing in network marketing but I believe if you understand how to fail, it may open up your eyes to how to actually achieve.
4 Ways to Fail as a Network Marketing Rep
1. Blame your sponsor. If you want the magic pill of failure, lets blame our sponsor. See, if you follow this step you are powerless to do anything about it, IE, the perfect solution to failure. Here are some sample lines you can tell your friends and family to take yourself completely off the hook for your lack of success:
“I tried really hard but my sponsor would not call me back”
“My sponsor promised he/she would give me 6 personal sign ups, hold my hand and wipe my behind but they were too busy”
“You know how these things are, they get you all pumped up, make big promises then take your money.”
Few reasons are as bullet-proof as blaming your sponsor. Next time you are backed into a corner and being questioned on your lack of success, don’t forget this gem.
2. Spend time doing everything but the things that make actual money. This one is pretty strong too. Look really, really busy so everyone sympathizes with how much work you are doing. Be working on that blog, article submission espresso machine, hell, maybe even do surveys at the local bar, but, whatever you do, DON’T try to retail or recruit anyone. When working for maximum failure and minimum success you want to avoid the following: Inviting, Prospecting, or Following-Up.
3. Declare the absence of a warm list. So many copy-writers in Internet land have made it profitable and popular to use terms such as “NFL” (No Friends Left) when referring to talking to people you actually know so it makes for a perfect way to get agreement from others when you declare you have exhausted your warm leads and you have zero friends and family left to talk to about any product, regardless of what the opportunity is. This is a perfect segway into getting others to buy into what you HAVE been spending your time on (see way 2 on how to fail as a network marketing rep, above). What is cool about this way is you eliminate any possible training that could help you to actually talking to people correctly without being annoying so instead, you just get to be comfortable that you are unable to learn a non-annoying way to promote anything, hence, utter failure at any level of growth which, at least for this blog post, equals success.
4. Have a really busy (or at worst) inconvenient schedule. This is a good one, what better thing to blame than time? You certainly don’t have the same fancy, luxurious amount of hours in the day as those other show-offs of network marketing so lets ensure your schedule is really busy, and, if we cannot fake that, lets at least make it inconvenient. What are some variables completely out of control in our lives, ah, oh yeah, kids! As someone who wants to fail at network marketing, lets face it, Success should come conveniently and fit within our current, existing schedule without changing anything ourselves. No one has ever built a business that had kids so how could anyone expect you to? If anyone catches on that your schedule you currently work is less than 100-120 hours a week, simply input a device you have no control over to quickly remedy the situation and avoid any potential blame to yourself. If anyone tries to corner you to tell you that if you had more money coming in from your opportunity you would have more time to yourself, quickly revert to one of these bullet-proof, success deflecting statements, “It’s Not All About Money”, “It’s easy for you to say because…”(insert any nominal trait the accuser may possess that you do not) or “You are right, I will start doing that tomorrow.” Do not underestimate the power of procrastination to get a success pusher off your back, telling them you will start it tomorrow works a minimum of 3 times, always use their optimism against them.
To truly fail, you have to dig deep. But to fail is only half the solution, when you can consistently fail and at the same time avoid blame, you are a true master.
Stay tuned for my next blog post – 3 Ways to Fail as a Network Marketing Recruiter
***Why did I write this? I wrote this blog in a manner that I hope gets across that I believe anyone can succeed, IF they take responsibility for their actions. Are there some crummy recruiters out there? Absolutely. Can you succeed without them anyway, Absolutely. You are responsible for where you are and where you are going in life so choose success, not blame. I hope this helps you. I am always fighting for your greatness.

Hi Ray,
great post, seems to be funny, but it isn’t. People win by design and they fail by design.
Take care

Awesome Ray. As always, you speak the truth and inject some fun along the way. Everyone needs to look in the mirror and recognize that their success (or failure in this case) depends on them. No blaming anyone else, no more getting ready to get ready (I have been more than guilty on that one), and losing focus or getting sidetracked.Keep it up man!

You definitely have way of speaking what I am sure many experience. Although it may be suppressed in the back of the mind, it is great to have it spelled out like a checklist. Excellent post.

That was awesome!
There are so many ways to fail if you really try too. Sometimes all it takes is a little personal responsibility to say I don’t want to succeed in this.
Network marketing is not the only way to be successful, but to be successful in anything requires a lot of work. In Network marketing it just can come a lot quicker.
Figure out what you want and stop making excuses. Just don’t get stuck in a rut and let your imaginary excuses dictate your reality.
You want to succeed right? If you do what are you doing is not taking you closer to your goal, what ever that may be, then change it.
What’s Your Dream? Make it Happen!

Ain’t that the truth. !!!! After all, we’re only human, and not all humans will succeed in business, let alone life. If you really want to succeed, you have to do what is beneficial to YOU. Use YOUR style and what’s comfortable for YOU. Learn and adapt from those who have become successful. but put your own spin on it. Otherwise, go ahead and play the blame game and use all the escuses that you can think of.

Funny piece, Ray!!
However, unless you’re planning on mentioning it in pt.2, you forgot about the ” Electronic Income Reducer (TV)”.
” Alan, I’m afraid I won’t be able to watch that webinar (or listen to that conf. call or go to that opp. meeting) ’cause American Idol’s on at that time (or Lost or Grey’s Anatomy or Dancing WIth The Stars, etc.). “

Ray, Taking a personal inventory and taking responsibility is by far the hardest yet most rewarding thing anyone can do. Although we all do not wish to look in the mirror, it is the only place to find the answers to our success or failures. Which are one in the same. They both provide value to us. Thank you for another great post. You have inspired me to hold true to my own why and to learn and grow in every way. You are a great leader and I consider you a great friend as well.

Hi Ray
I love the post. It is sooo true. I was laughing reading it but should not have been because it is so true for many people. Including me at times in the past.
Cheers

I was actually becoming a world-wide expert on at least 2 of those topics. Now is always a great time for change.
Thanks Ray,
