My Interview with Arianna Huffington

Excited to share with you my interview with Arianna Huffington, please enjoy and feel free to share!

Watch the short video and learn how we can thank Arianna for her time!

Thanks Joshua!

My buddy Joshua Santos emailed me one day and asked “Hey, would you like to interview Arianna Huffington?” He had no idea that I was half way through her book when he emailed me and I, of course, jumped at the chance.

If you have yet to get her book, I highly suggest it, you can get your copy from Amazon here.

Who is Arianna Huffington?

Born in Greece, Arianna is a well-known author and most famous for being the creator of The Huffington Post which she started in 2005. She’s written several best-selling books, the latest being Thrive: The Third Metric to Redefining Success and Creating a Life of Well-Being, Wisdom, and Wonder.

In 2009, Huffington was named as number 12 in Forbes first-ever list of the Most Influential Women In Media. She has also moved up to number 42 in The Guardians Top 100 in Media List. As of 2014, she is listed as the 52nd most powerful woman in the world by Forbes.

In 2011, AOL acquired The Huffington Post for US$315 million and made Arianna Huffington President and Editor-in-Chief of The Huffington Post Media Group, which included The Huffington Post and then-existing AOL properties such as AOL Music, Engadget, Patch Media, and StyleList.

Like many celebrities I don’t agree with all of her stances on politics but that is NOT the point of this interview (did I mention politics was not the point of this interview?) I love her concepts in her new book and wanted to ask her a few questions. Before you get to the questions, please watch this short one minute video with some instructions.

My Interview with Arianna Huffington

(RH). What has been the most amazing story you have heard from people consuming and adhering to the practices you lay out in Thrive? Any that jump out?

(Arianna Huffington) I love Mark Bertolini’s story. As CEO of Aetna, the third-largest health insurance provider in America, he discovered the health benefits of meditation, yoga, and acupuncture while recovering from a horrible ski accident that left him with a broken neck. He proceeded to make them available to his forty-nine thousand employees and brought in Duke University to conduct a study on the cost savings. The results? A 7 percent drop in health care costs in 2012 and sixty- nine minutes of additional productivity per day for those employees who participated in Aetna’s wellness programs. And doing yoga one hour each week reduced stress among employees by one-third.

(RH). What I got from Thrive is that you truly want to cause a shift in the way people think about success and working. Is that part of your overall vision or was that more mission centric to the book itself?

(Arianna Huffington) The book is one way of expressing a larger vision. In April we held our two-day Third Metric Live event, Thrive, in New York. More than 2,000 people attended to be part of a conversation on how we can unplug, recharge and renew ourselves, and redefine success beyond money and power. And the Third Metric is a major editorial initiative at The Huffington Post. We’re using all the tools at our disposal to tell the stories of people redefining success to include well-being, wisdom, wonder and giving — and just as important — inviting people to tell their stories themselves.

(RH). In regards to sleep, ever since I remember, long before I had goals or were motivated, I have not needed much sleep. I can remember maybe three times in my life getting 8 hours (and I am 36). I read this article a few years back – http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB10001424052748703712504576242701752957910 and thought it applied to me, curious as to your thoughts on us weirdos that just don’t seem to need much sleep =)

(Arianna Huffington) You may be one of the handful of people who doesn’t need 7 to 8 hours of sleep, but for the vast majority of us, there is practically no element of our lives that’s not improved by getting adequate sleep. And there is no element of life that’s not diminished by a lack of sleep. Including our ability to make wise decisions. Bill Clinton, who used to famously get only five hours of sleep a night, admitted, “Every important mistake I’ve made in my life, I’ve made because I was too tired.”

(RH). It is very clear you are a visionary that plays and thinks big. One thing I always tell my audience is to constantly think bigger, any tips on either scaling your business or thinking bigger to make the biggest impact?

(Arianna Huffington) I have twelve steps I recommend in Thrive, and each one of us needs to pick the step that most resonates with us. Each of these steps can help us to thrive in our lives, be more creative and effective at work, and make a bigger impact. Here are just three of the twelve:

-Have a specific time at night when you regularly turn off your devices— and gently escort them out of your bedroom. Disconnecting from the digital world will help you reconnect to your wisdom, intuition, and creativity. And when you wake up in the morning, don’t start your day by looking at your smartphone. Take one minute— trust me, you do have one minute— to breathe deeply, or be grateful, or set your intention for the day.

-Introduce five minutes of meditation into your day. Eventually, you can build up to fifteen or twenty minutes a day (or more), but even just a few minutes will open the door to creating a new habit— and all the many proven benefits it brings.

-Drop something that no longer serves you. I did a major “life audit” when I turned forty, and I realized how many projects I had committed to in my head— such as learning German and becoming a good skier and learning to cook. Most remained unfinished, and many were not even started. Yet these countless incomplete projects drained my energy and diffused my attention. As soon as the file was opened, each one took a little bit of me away. It was very liberating to realize that I could “complete” a project by simply dropping it— by eliminating it from my to-do list. Why carry around this unnecessary baggage? That’s how I completed learning German and becoming a good skier and learning to cook and a host of other projects that now no longer have a claim on my attention.

(RH). What project or work are you most excited about right now that you’d like to share with my audience?

(Arianna Huffington) Launching The Huffington Post in Greece, India and the Middle East has been a longtime dream of mine, and I’m thrilled to say they’re on our short list of upcoming international editions.

Wasn’t that Awesome?

Seriously so grateful that one of the most influential people in the world took the time to respond to my questions. Please help us show Arianna Huffington some gratitude by thanking her on Twitter, her twitter is @ariannahuff and again you can get her book here.

Thanks so much to all of YOU and IF you got major benefit from these questions and her answers, please share this with others to help them THRIVE!
