7 Ways to Be Unmessable With Your
Homebased Business Opportunity

Homebased Business OpportunitySometimes when you are in an MLM or a Homebased Business Opportunity, you run into people that want to disagree with your view of the world and put you down. There are roving bands of negative people that I believe are under the illusion that they get paid to shoot down the dreams of others. Here are 7 ways on how you can be unmessable while building your homebased business opportunity.

1. Understand building a homebased business opportunity is a numbers game

This is very critical for people to understand. When you talk to anywhere from 5-30 people per day, you never get hung up on just one. When you prospect a decent number of people every single day, pretty soon you are following up with 5-10 people per day and when you do that, no individual that shoots you down will stand out that much.

2. Don’t be addicted to an outcome

When you very first saw your homebased business opportunity presentation, chances are you immediately thought of a brother in law or neighbor that would be perfect for the business. You concentrate on how well they are going to do and then you suffer massive depression when they tell you no. If you are to make large amounts of money in Network marketing, you understand that all you have to do is invite a certain number of people for an extended period of time and those that like or are looking, will join your business. Don’t let your brother in law Joe kill your dreams, he does NOT put food on your table, you do.

3. Have a scripted response for the naysayers

I have a couple things that I say when someone tells me no, I either say “Perfect, no problem, thanks for looking” or, “That’s totally cool, I understand it is not for you, however, do you happen to know two people who have been affected by the economy that might actually want to make some extra money without interfering with what they are doing currently?” A lot of times when they hear that line, they are interested all of a sudden =) When you do not chase them or beg or bug them, it sometimes baffles them and they then express interest.

4. Have daily goals that will help you build your homebased business opportunity

When you have large goals that are far out there, you can get discouraged much easier. It is much more powerful to have daily goals that “reset” each day. For more information on how to set those, check out my post on Goals for New Year

5. Make a game of it

Write down the names of the people who are really nasty to you. Put them in a file. This file will be for when you earn a free vacation, car, or make your first $100,000 to come back to and inform them of your success. It probably will not get them to join but it sure will feel good =)

6. Be Like MikeHomebased Business Opportunity

“I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”
- Michael Jordan

You see, sports is NOT that different from building an mlm or homebased business opportunity. You have to train, be dedicated, look stupid sometimes, but just like you don’t slam dunk your first time trying, you get better along the way. Know that someday you will be sharing your story on stage if you just be like mike.

7. Extinguish the Blame-Thrower

If you want to assure defeat, blame someone else. Here is a list of things you can blame:

  • Parents
  • kids
  • spouses
  • time
  • money
  • your upline
  • your product
  • your training materials
  • your company’s presentation
  • Your messy desk

100% of the time, if you find something to cry about, you will get your wish and want to cry. When you are in action, you simply do not have time to talk about others, blame others or think about how bad things are. Here is one crazy example: On December 16th, 2010, I did a Effective Leadership Skills contest where I gave away some prizes to people that shared with me a great story and I picked a grand prize winner. Yesterday, I got an email from someone that is still upset over that blog that their story did not win. If you live your life looking for things to be offended by, life is going to be pretty darn hard on you. Guess what, LIFE IS NOT FAIR and People are going to do things you do not agree with, get over it, and focus on what you CAN do and you will become UNMESSABLE!

A product I fully support that has helped a lot of people have more success in their homebased business opportunity, is the little black book of scripts that you can download for free on Todd Falcone’s site.

I agree with everything you have stated here.It is a numbers game but it also is about developing relationships, especially if you are building online. Find the business you can identify with and are passionate about and be unstoppable. You are a great example of that.I feel that way about my business too and it is growing very quickly. Thanks for all you share Ray.

Good points, Ray. While “network marketing” ultimately is a people business – it is FIRST a numbers game! The issue for most is purely… not getting their message seen or heard by enough people on a daily basis.

    Hey Ray,

You are right it is a numbers game, and when you realize that a few negative people won’t get you down. There are always going to be rude people, but when you treat it as a numbers game you won’t let them get you down.

    Great post,

Man I’ve listened to your story and where you came from and even in this post all I hear that you made a Decision to succeed Ray. It’s a lot like that Will Smith video where he talks about once you decide the universe will move out of your way. Awesome man keep pushing Ray.

My first thought is that you must be joking about someone being hung up on the contest…. over a book? But then I realize that you just can’t make something like that up.

I like it that you call it a numbers game. I hear too many marketers say “I don’t like to think of people as numbers”. That tells me that they are too emotionally involved and attached to the response of their leads. (and that they don’t understand what is meant by calling it a numbers game)

Like Jim Rohn said, you first make up in numbers what you lack in skill so get busy doing the numbers so you can get the skills. Then it becomes an effective numbers game.

Thanks again for the gift card from the contest! I put it in my wallet and forgot I had it until I just read this post. I am investing it in a copy of 4 hour work week and Crush It.

    Thanks Ray!

    Ray,

You hit the nail right on the head once again. Your post reminds me of Dr. Covey’s chapter in “7 Habits of Highly Effective People” on the Circle of Concern vs. the Circle of Influence. Most people spend the majority of their time focused on the Circle of Concern. As he puts it, they “major in minor things.” All of your suggestions above, refocus us on the Circle of Influence – the things that we can impact personally. For example, while we can’t directly control the outcome of a presentation with an one person, we can increase the number of times we invite prospects to view presentations and we can continue to improve or skills to increase the likelihood that we will close the presentation successfully.

Great post and thanks again for your leadership.

Incredible as Always Ray, I always love the story about Michael Jordan, there is also the story about Walt Disney, He actually went Bankrupt 4 times before “Making it”.

The moral behind the story is: “It does not matter how you fall down, It’s the way you get back up that will make a difference !!”.

Many people blame others for their failures instead of looking at themselves, You can always “pass the bucket” and blame others but eventually the bucket will come back and hit you in the face, but when it does, it will be FULL !!

    Talk to you soon !!

  15. Mark Ghobril Says:

Ray, that was awesome as always. My favorite story is Star Wars.

In 1971, Universal Studios consented to make American Graffiti and Star Wars as a twin-picture contract with George Lucas.

Star Wars in the initial concept was later rejected because the story was too difficult to understand. Lucas then went on to write several drafts and the fourth, completed in 1976, was made ready for a film production.

At that stage Lucas realized that his conception of the story was beyond the capacity of a single story. He anticipated it would comprise three trilogies or nine films to narrate.

So far six films and three animated series have been produced for television, with a live-action series and a 3D CGI animated series in pre-production as well as a 3D CGI full-length theatrical movie. Following the success of the movies and merchandising for both the original trilogy and its spin-offs, two cartoons were created for the younger fan base.

Box office revenue as of 2008 has totaled approximately $4.3 billion.

Here is a guy wth a vision!!! I mean think about that…he has completely revolutionalized the entire film industry…is responsible for pioneering some of the greatest technology for the film industry including Pixar, and THX. Did he do that alone, of course not he had a TEAM who followed him because he LED them. He stayed focussed, and even when Universal said no after accepting it, he worked on it for 5 more years. Today Lucas is one of the most influential people in the entire film industry.

If George Lucas can create Star Wars surely we can build a business which allows us to collect Gold & Silver assets, save money on our taxes, and someone else does all the hard work. Suddenly, that does not seem so hard, does it?

    Haha, yeah man, great story!
